How we grade an NES cartridge

Full offerA clean grey shell with clean contacts and the label in good condition. Light wear on the plastic is normal for a forty-year-old cartridge and costs nothing.

A quarter or half offWriting or marker on the plastic shell takes a quarter off. A sticker or writing on the label, a peeling label, moderate yellowing, or a cartridge that needs heavy cleaning before it boots takes half.

No offerLabel missing, ripped or faded, a cracked shell, a cartridge that will not play, or a reproduction.

A few NES games save your progress on a battery inside the cartridge. Where a listing marks one, a dead battery is not a refusal: we solder in a new one and deduct the charge shown on that game. Every cartridge rule is on the Condition Guidelines page.

Common titles are worth a few dollars each, and the late releases, the licensed games that were only printed once, and the oddities collectors chase are worth far more. Do you buy NES games without the box?

Yes. Most NES games come to us as loose cartridges, and a loose cartridge is our Loose condition with its own price. The Boxed price needs the original cardboard box in good condition: solid corners, no crushing, tears or water damage, light shelf wear is fine. A worn, damaged or reproduction box pays the Loose price.

What if an NES cartridge is dirty, yellowed or will not start?

Light dust and light wear cost nothing; we clean everything. Writing on the plastic shell takes a quarter off, and a sticker or writing on the label, a peeling label, moderate yellowing or a cartridge that needs heavy cleaning before it boots takes half. A cartridge that still will not play after cleaning is paid at $0 or returned to you at your cost, so test each one before you ship.

What about a dead save battery?

Some NES games, the ones that save your progress, have a battery inside the cartridge. Where the listing marks one, we solder in a fresh battery and deduct the charge shown on that game, so a dead battery never stops the sale.

How much can I sell a Nintendo NES for?

Our base payouts start at $55 with one official controller, for the NES Classic Mini, and the original front loader and the top loader sit above that. Light or moderate yellowing, a missing controller or cord, and the famous blinking-light problem are deductions rather than refusals. A cracked casing or severe yellowing or staining is the one thing we cannot buy.

Should I sell NES games online or trade them in at GameStop?

A trade-in counter pays store credit and prices for a walk-in customer, and a 1980s cartridge is not what a counter is set up for.
